China’s Communist Party opens door to gig workers as congress delegates
China’s Communist Party says outstanding party members among gig workers should be recommended as candidates for its 21st national congress in regions where new forms of employment have a large presence. Delivery couriers, ride-hailing drivers and influencers could become delegates for the first time. The congress is scheduled for the second half of next year and is expected to bring together 2,360 delegates; candidates will be recommended locally and vetted by higher authorities before a vote.
