54 Japanese cities considering tourism taxes, Nikkei survey finds
A Nikkei survey covering 815 Japanese cities and wards found that 54 cities were considering tourism taxes, while 37 had already introduced them. In Hokkaido, more than half of cities had either adopted or were considering such taxes. The report describes municipalities seeking independent tourism-related revenue for growth investment amid population decline and concerns over shrinking tax receipts.
