California Governor Newsom says he will commute death sentences of all 548 death row inmates
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would commute the death sentences of all 548 inmates on the state's death row. In a three-page letter addressed to “all Californians”, he said state-sanctioned killing was incompatible with California's values. The announcement follows his March 2019 moratorium on executions.
