Japan urges caution on retail sales of overseas private-asset products

Japanese authorities are urging financial institutions to exercise caution when selling overseas private-asset investments to retail customers, an unnamed Financial Services Agency official said. The official cited concerns that limited liquidity and disclosure could expose individuals to risks they may struggle to understand, including through variable life insurance backed by private assets. The official said the FSA is not seeking to curb the private-asset market and declined to say whether it would approve such insurance products.
